Answering role-call as Augie Pensa, yet known throughout the offshore racing community as the “Godfather of Offshore Racing,” Augie spent practically his entire life on boats. His childhood years were spent at the Jersey Shore near Barnegat Bay and Point Pleasant first riding and eventually running the family's watercrafts, some of which included a 16' Evinrude, 28' Formula, and 30' Chris Craft. As an adult, two deciding factors lead Augie to the racecourse, the first- his continual reminiscing back to the exhilarating moments when he was around his uncle, who worked as a mechanic for the offshore raceboat Crazy Greek; and the second- his close call with death when he nearly suffered a massive heart attack.
Augie's vision of racing would materialize into reality with the purchase of a1996 Wellcraft 38 Scarab, named The Delicate Sound of Thunder, after the 1988 Pink Floyd album. In the year 2002, he would launch his offshore racing career along with Kevin Hans on the throttles and Keith McCue navigating. Sporting Wazzup Racing Engines that put out 700 hp and racing as Team Nesquik (aka The Delicate Sound of Thunder), the P4 class boat would go on to capture the 2002, 2003 and 2004 OPA Northeast Divisional Championships, the 2003 and 2004 OPA Northeast National Championships, and the 2002 and 2003 SBI Northeast Divisional Championships. Team Nesquik which has Augie throttling and Keith “Q-Ball” McCue driving will once again be campaigning the Scarab both on the SBI/APBA and the OPA circuits for 2005.
When Augie is not in the boat, his time is divided between running his Union City, New Jersey, moving company or spending it with wife Lisa, and children, Jamie, Samantha and Augie Jr. Planning how much Italian bread, garlic and tomatoes will be needed for his generous Italian feasts also take up a fair share of Augie's agenda. No fellow racers can ever complain about not having enough food “per manger” (to eat) because this Italian food connoisseur has become notorious for cooking up Italian feasts for all participants during race weekends. |
